Yoga has several demonstrated benefits. The primary change every yoga practitioner notices is the improved flexibility and strength. When combined with meditation, a yoga practice can help in achieving mental and physical health benefits. Yet it remains exclusive to only those who practice yoga regularly. Here are a few reasons why every fitness enthusiast should include yoga as part of their workout.

1. Flexibility for Runners

Running and flexibility are not synonymous. However, that does not discount the benefits of yoga that a runner could retain. Muscle fibres train well under sprints and endurance runs, but flexibility can help connective tissue become looser. Connective tissue plays an important role, as it consists of joints, ligaments and tendons, and they are essential for running. Flexibility can also help in setting a new mile pace, longer strides and better running form.

2. Flexibility for Strength athletes

Powerlifting, bodybuilding, strongman among many other feats of strength are often pictured with heavy weights. Their immense show of strength and capability of what the human body can do is remarked in various competitions across the world. However, it is not lifting the iron that gets them strong.

Lower back, hamstrings, and many other muscle groups require adequate stretching so prolonged lifting does not cause injuries. Yoga can be a strength athlete’s best friend by aiding with joint health, improved strength and posture. This can help in setting a better one-rep maximum.

3. Mental health benefits

Exercise is associated with release of hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. This results in a positive feeling after a good workout. Yoga however, indulges the mind and produces mental health benefits during the workout. Remaining present can help in increased focus, concentration and positive well being.

Implementing yoga as part of a dynamic stretching routine, cooldown or even a separate day dedicated to yoga can help one reap the mental and physical health benefits. Better flexibility, increased connective tissue health and mental health benefits are some among the many reasons why yoga has a place in a week's workout.
