Squash World Teams C'ship: Indian men's and women's teams move to quarters
Indian women's team reached the quarters of the WSF World Team Championships after 12 years with a win over Australia.
Indian men's and women's squash teams moved to the quarter-finals in the WSF World Team Championships on Wednesday in Hong Kong, China.
The Indian women's squash team entered the quarterfinals after 12 years beating Australia 2-1 in a tightly fought game.
Anahat Singh and Akanksha Salunkhe won their respective games for India while Nirupama Dubey lost her game.
Anahat defeated Jessica Walt 11-9,11-6, and 11-8 to take the lead in the tie.
After Anahat, World number 206 Nirupama Dubey lost 11-8, 8-11, 9-11, and 9-11 to Sarah Cardwell to level the tie at 1-1. Akanksha made sure that India entered the quarters easily as she defeated Alex Haydon 11-8, 11-5, and 11-6 in the final match.
The last time the women’s team made it to this stage was back in 2012 when the tournament was held in Nimes, France.
In the men's match, India came back from behind to defeat Malaysia 2-1 and enter the quarter-finals.
The tie started with Abhay Singh losing to Eain Yow Ng 11-13, 9-11, and 5-11, and Malaysia taking a 1-0 lead.
However, Veer Chotrani and Velavan Senthilkumar won their matches against Mohd Kamal and Sanjay Jeeva to win the tie for India. Velavan defeated Sanjay 11-8, 7-11, 11-3, and 11-4 while Veer defeated Mohd Kamal 11-8, 11-6, and 11-5.
Indian men's team will face France tomorrow while the Indian women's team will take on the USA.
