In a shocking incident, a national-level hockey player and a district-level volleyball player were shot dead at a roadside dhaba at Manjir Nagar, Patiala in the early hours of Thursday.

The dead have been identified as Amrik Singh and Simranjit Singh, both athletes and Powercom employees. In fact, Amrik turned out for Punjab electricity board’s hockey team back in 2003-04.

A report in The Tribune claimed that the police suspect three unidentified men who were earlier having liquor with the two victims. Police said they had rounded up a few suspects.

Both Amrik and Simranjit were reportedly shot in the head by a Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) employee, Manoj Kumar, and his son around 1 am following an argument. Apparently, Amrik and Simranjit had a heated argument with Manoj and his son over a petty issue following which an altercation ensued.

Amrik and Simranjit were able to overpower the father-son duo. Flustered, Manoj went home only to return to the dhaba with his double-barrelled rifle. He then fired at Amrik and Simranjit, both of whom died on the spot, before managing to flee the scene.

A case has been registered under Section 302 of the IPC.
