12-year-old archer fighting for life after being hit by arrow in SAI

In another bizarre incident, one young archer was injured during a training session at a SAI extension centre in Chabua in upper Assam on Wednesday afternoon and is currently in critical condition, fighting for her life. An arrow hit 12-year-old archer Shivangini Gohain who has been immediately shifted to New Delhi for surgery.

The archer is now admitted at the AIIMS. Her condition is said to be critical. Her X-ray report showed that the arrow was within striking distance of her spinal cord. The SAI authorities, however, were not available for comments.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning. Shivangini was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Brahmaputra Hospital, with the arrow lodged in her body. She was kept under observation at the hospital, which is not equipped to handle an operation of the nature Shivangini needs to have the arrow removed.

She was flown to New Delhi and admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital Trauma Centre today evening. She will undergo surgery to remove the arrow here.

Shivangini, who is the daughter of Birinchi Gohain of Chabua’s Deodhai village has been practicing archery since the age of nine and had participated in plenty of tournaments winning several medals. Recently, she participated in the 65th National School Games Archery Championship organized by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh.

The Sports Ministry has announced that SAI will bear all the expenses incurred in her treatment.

A few months back a freak accident had taken the life of a 17-year-old Kerala youngster during the 63rd Kerala State Junior Athletics Championship being held at the municipal stadium in Pala. The death had shaken the sports fraternity in the country.
