Cycling is a very popular form of exercise or getaway for many across the world. It promotes better cardiovascular health and fat loss. Here are a few ways that cycling has proven its mettle for people who wish to get fitter.

Cycle Anywhere

Cycling outdoors can provide a breath of fresh air and a good cardiovascular workout. However, winter, rain or other circumstances might prevent outdoor workouts. In such a case, cycling makes itself available indoors through stationary bikes and spin classes. When it comes to cycling, location is never an excuse and cardio is an evergreen option. However, outdoor cycling has its charms, such as changes in incline and decline which may not be present while stationary cycling.

Calorie Burn

According to Harvard University, a person weighing 70kg could burn as much as 260 calories when cycling at a moderate intensity for 30 minutes. However, this number varies from person to person, as athletic history, difference in fat and muscle mass are some of the factors to be considered. Nonetheless, cycling is not only fun but can also provide a good calorie burn, allowing one to have a guilt free cheat meal.

Toned Muscles

If looking good is the goal, cycling is one of the best ways to get rid of fat and look better. Though some might argue that swimming, HIIT or other forms of cardio are better at torching fat from the body, cycling helps tone the leg muscles. It also helps in building core strength as cyclists have to maintain an upright position, which helps in posture and avoiding unnecessary stress to the spine.

Better Mental Health

Much research has been done on exercise and mental well being. A bout of moderate or vigorous exerciser results in the release of endorphins throughout the body, commonly known as the feel-good hormones, which enhance mental well being. Due to its enduring nature, cycling can also help one develop concentration and improve focus, something that can help counter the side-effects of today’s fast paced urban lifestyle.

These are some of the many benefits that make cycling an affordable and evergreen option to remain fit. Many countries around the world even have dedicated cycling routes on road for those who wish to commute to work or other places without fearing collision or accidents.
