National Games 2025: A colorful spectacle as PM Modi inaugurates the Games
10,000 athletes to compete across 32 disciplines in seven cities; Close to 25,000 people in attendance for opening ceremony.
The 38th National Games commenced in Uttarakhand on Tuesday with a vibrant opening ceremony highlighting the state’s rich religious heritage and biodiversity.
The event, held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun, witnessed a packed crowd of 25,000 to celebrate the occasion.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, joined by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, officially inaugurated the Games.
Accompanied by dignitaries including Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh, Union Sports Minister Raksha Khadse, and Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, PM Modi toured the stadium in a decorated golf cart before being presented with a traditional cap, shawl, and a memento featuring the Games mascot ‘Mauli’.
‘Mauli’, inspired by Uttarakhand’s state bird Monal, represents the region’s natural beauty, cultural diversity, and ecological significance.
The Games carry the theme of ‘Green Games’ to promote sustainable practices.
Reiterates 2036 Olympic bid
Speaking at the opening ceremony, PM Modi called the National Games a beautiful portrait of 'Ek Bharat, Sreshth Bharat.'
He also touched upon India's ambitious goal of hosting the 2036 Olympics.
"We are pushing for hosting rights of 2036 Olympics, it will take Indian sports to new heights," he said.
He further added "Wherever Olympics happen, all sectors gain. It creates better facilities for athletes."
The National Games hold special significance for Uttarakhand as the state celebrates its silver jubilee year.
Events will take place across seven cities, with Dehradun as the primary venue, and athletes will compete for around 450 gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Close to 10,000 participants are set to take part in the multi-sporting event this year.
Notable participants include Olympic shooters Swapnil Kusale and Sarabjot Singh, shuttler Lakshya Sen, and boxer Lovlina Borgohain.
Two-time Olympic medal winner Neeraj Chopra, 2024 Paris Olympics medal winner Manu Bhaker are some of the big names who will be absent from the event.
Demonstration sports, including kalarippayattu, yogasana, mallakhambh, and rafting, add a new flavor to the Games, which will run until February 14.
