Why I race | By Kunal Maini
Professional race car driver Kunal Maini has driven his way to glory and has secured podium finishes in every race he participated in last year. Speed has been constant ammunition for the 27-year-old, who topped the leaderboard at the Formula Junior Racing Series 2019. Kunal shares his tale of why he races.
The human life we all are experiencing is a one-player game. You may want to believe that you, as a person, branch out and connect with a lot of other humans, animals, plants, and inanimate objects. Humans from the time they are born till the time they close their eyes are having a hyper-sensory experience wherein all their senses are blasted with sounds, lights, smells, touch, and taste. This is it. Your whole life is a sum total of all these experiences that you have.
Then what should you do? You have got to make this experience — this to and fro of stimuli and response- richer. Most of us zone out, branch out, and make our lives about things, people, imaginary concepts like money and religion. You have got to zoom inward, focus inwards. You are not your job, not your friends, not your clothes, not your bank balance, you are what you feel right now, you are what is happening right now. The concept of past is nothing but a shared recollection of humans, most of which will remain undocumented. Our stories will most likely be forgotten, how many people do you remember from 1900s. You can name what 10, 20? The concept of future is a function of actions and events taking place right now. Your action at this very moment, is changing how the future of you and the world is shaping up, so what are you doing with this moment? 
Our lives are nothing but this very moment. I know this. I have realized this. When I put my foot on that pedal, I feel the rush. When the car races forward and pushes me back, I feel the thrill. When I am clocking a speed at which most of the world is blurry, I don’t know who I am, I don’t know where I am from, I don’t know what happened in the past, or will happen in the future. I know only this moment, I feel the amalgamation of the man and the machine as one, I feel the slightest of movements, my eyes, ears, limbs, are operating in a beautiful opera. When I race, I feel alive in the moment. That’s why I do it, because at that moment, I am playing the one player game, and I am in control."
Making speed his ally, Kunal has also expertise in speed mathematics and speedcubing. He can solve a Rubik's cube in 13 seconds. As his next racing weekend is coming up, he aims to continue his winning streak. But the lack of sponsorships is holding him back from putting a 100% of his headspace into the races. Kunal now seeks a branding partnership to fund him Rs 20,000 for his next race. It can be a pilot sponsorship for one month that can be carried on basis of his performance and ROI.
