The country’s best shooters, precisely, the pistol shooters, are all under his coaching umbrella in the national team. Manu Bhaker, Anish Bhanwala, Saurabh Chaudhary, Chinki Yadav — all these prominent shooters are his students. While these students have been winning medals all over the globe, the man himself, as a national coach, boasts of a lot of caps in his feather.

And yet, Jaspal Rana does not want to mention any of his student’s names when asked about the shooters' chances of winning an Olympic medal. Rather he believes in the team’s overall success. “All of them are highly talented and all of them are consistent. So how can I mention one or two names?” he asked.

When asked about his most cherished memories in the last 10 years’ coaching journey, Rana recalled the smile on the faces of his students at the Junior World Cup last year. He said, “That was the moment that I will cherish forever... When I saw the smile on the faces of all the team members... They all had won medals.”

Rana, who had won a gold medal in the 1994 Asian Games, also revealed how happy he was over the medals won by Saurabh and Manu Bhaker at last year’s Youth Olympics. He also remembered Manu’s gold-winning performance in the ISS World Cup this year.

The experienced coach further talked about the importance of exposure for young shooters. He said, “Participating in the ISSF World Cups this year has been a great help for the young Indian shooters. They will be facing the same World’s top shooters in Tokyo also. So, I feel they will benefit from their experience at the World Cups this year.

A major controversy went up when Rana was denied Dronacharya award this year. According to reports, the best students of Rana, included in the TOP scheme did not mention his name as their personal coach officially. Reports also came that the selection committee for Dronacharya award denied Rana due to this reason.

Commenting on the issue, Rana explained, “I do not have greed for Dronacharya. I do not want the award. My fight is only against those persons who have submitted wrong information to the committee about me. I have never asked those shooters, included in the TOP scheme to write my name officially. I am not their personal coach. I am the national coach."

"The coaches, who have been selected for the award are great in their respective fields. It should be the Federation’s look-out whether they choose me or others. But the reason shown by the committee behind excluding my name was completely unjust,” he added before revealing that has already filed a case in the court for justice.
