India's young grandmaster Praggnanandhaa, who became the youngest Indian ever and the second youngest in the world to cross the Elo live rating of 2600, became London Chess Classic FIDE Champion on Friday with a score of 7.5/9. He was joined at the top by Anton Smirnov, who also scored 7.5/9. Indian players had a successful outing with Aravindh Chithambaram finishing at third place, while both Sahaj Grover and R. Vaishali ended with a score of 6.5/9.

Praggnanandhaa faced of Aravindh in round 8. Though the former found himself in a challenging position, Aravindh snapped a pawn and which gave Praggnanandhaa the chance to equalise. He was joined by Anton Smirnov at the top. On the top board Praggnanandhaa was taking on his compatriot Sahaj Grover, With his draw, Praggnandhaa secured victory.

It has been a terrific year for the Chennai lad who won the Xtracon Open in Denmark and the World Youh Championship U-18. He hopes to end the year on a high as he will be taking part at the Sunway Sitges Open 2019 beginning from 13 December.

Praggnanandhaa has achieved the feat of crossing 2600 at the age of 14 years, 3 months and 24 days at the end of seven rounds. John M. Burke of USA (born on July 1 2001) became the youngest to scale the 2600-mark in September 2015, thereby breaking the record set by China’s Wei Yi (June 2 1999) who achieved it in 14 years five months and 23 days.
