The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has sought to foster a positive school sports culture, that would in turn facilitate the effective character development of student athletes. In what is expected to nurture sporting talent among school-going children, the leading education council in the country has come up with a plan to introduce a compulsory sports period for students of class 1 to 12, focusing solely on health and physical education. This plan has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root levels by building a strong framework for all sports played in the country and with the aim to establish India as a great sporting country in the long run. Besides, there are a few proposals being planned to ensure that special kids are equally taken care of and not excluded from the classes. Use of wheelchairs, sign-language will be encouraged to ensure their participation in huge numbers. Experts believe that this move will prove beneficial for students to help them deal with academic pressure and promote holistic wellness. The move has received heavy appraisal from parents and sports enthusiasts alike, with a few suggesting that this will definitely diminish the risk of childhood obesity and health ailments arising from a largely sedentary lifestyle.
