Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Manika Batra are the faces of Indian table tennis. But, Gnanasekaran and Batra became popular there was Sharath Kamal who had caught the imagination of the Indian table-tennis fans.

Table Tennis is one of the lesser followed sports in India. But, it was Kamal which gave TT its due recognition in the country when he first started to impress with his impeccable style of play.

Kamal won singles gold in the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne. Batra was just 11 years old then too young to chalk out future course of her life.

Batra was undecided between modeling and sports and latter in her life she finally chose sports.

Kamal, now the top Indian paddler got the better of top-seeded Marcos Freitas of Portugal 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 3-11, 17-15 in the final of the the ITTF Challenger Plus Oman Open held recently.

It was after a gap of 10 years that he had won a Pro Tour title. His previous title was the the Egypt Open in 2010.

Gnanasekaran is another TT sensation who has grabbed a lot of headlines in the last few years. But to think of him being confused between his studies and the sport when Kamal had won his first title seems amusing. He was into engineering before he plunged into sports.

Kamal had qualified for the Athens Olympics in 2000 and was the only men’s table tennis player to be a part of the Bejing Olympics squad in 2008.

The Oman Open title was a long due title for Kamal and given the form he is in, we can expect many more laurels from the paddler.
