Indian table tennis players are all set to take part in the upcoming Qatar Open which is a World Tour platinum event to be held from 5th to 8th March.
Considered as one of the toughest pro tour events, Qatar is set to host many Indian paddlers including the star player Sathiyan Gnanasekaran along with Harmeet Desai, Mudit Dani, Jeet Chandra, Snehit Suravajjula and Sushmit Sriram in men’s singles while Amalraj and Sathiyan will pair up for the doubles event. Another pair, Sushmit Srirama and Harmeet Desai, will also be seen in action in men’s doubles.
In women’s singles, Madhurika Patkar and Sutirtha Mukherjee will lead the campaign along with Sreeja Akula, Krittwika Roy while in doubles, Sreeja Akula and Patkar will be paired up. Sutirtha Mukherjee and Harmeet Desai will be pairing up in mixed doubles event.
Gnanasekaran had recently won a silver in Hungarian Open with his partner Achanta Sarath Kamal, who will give this event a miss. He is currently ranked 30 in the world which is good enough for him to qualify for the Olympics and hence gives him the luxury to choose events he wants to play in, reports the Olympic Channel after an interview with the tennis star.
Another Indian star, Manika Batra, is going to give this tournament a miss.
The Qatar Open also doubles up as an Olympics 2020 qualifier for the mixed doubles event, and with Sharath and Manika not playing, they might have missed a chance to seal a Tokyo berth.
The event will be streamed live on the official ITTF website.
