Suffice to say that people in India have only a little knowledge of sports. Could the lack of sports knowledge be then a metaphor for a wider malaise? According to the report of the Research Center of the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), about 5.56% of the people in the country have proper knowledge of the game, which is alarmingly low.

Only 57 lakh people are associated with sports out of 125 crore people of India, according to researcher Kanishka Pandey of Research Center. She, however, added that any association with sports is either confined to their knowledge of the game or they themselves play it. Kanishka, who heads the Research Center, had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) with the Supreme Court last year for the inclusion of the game in the Fundamental Rights of the Constitution in the country.

"Only 5.56% of the population is sports literate. The percentage of women in it is 1.31%. 57 lakh people are directly or indirectly connected. Sports literacy in America is 20%. In China, about ten million people only take up badminton. If the rest of the games are added then the tally of China will overtake that of the USA," Kanishka told Dainik Bhaskar.
