Yet another competition for development of sports in schools as the School India Cup is slated to be held in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next few months. It is seen as a comprehensive inter school competition comprising of a varied number of sports to bring out the talented cream at that level. The announcement for the same was made at a conference convened by School Sports Promotion Foundation (SSPF) in Trichy over the weekend as reported by The Hindu. The Schools India Cup is an initiative conducted in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India and will include the sports of athletics, football, cricket, volleyball and basketball in three levels – district, State and National. Top performers in the competition will be given perks as well. They will be selected for National Camps and will undergo further training and competitions there. The best among those will be selected for Centre of Excellence in reputed and prominent schools. Their education, lodging and fooding will be taken care of free of cost, till class XII, a press release by SSPF said. On the occasion of the announcement of this annual event, Charles Borromeo, who won 800m gold in the 1982 Asian Games, a former athlete spoke of the role that this Schools Cup tries to achieve each year with students. It seeks to provide options to school students who prpbably wish to pursue a serious career in sports.

“With five sports disciplines this year, SSPF aims at reaching out to 10,000 schools across the country to provide holistic growth under National Talent Search & Nurture (NTSN) programme,” said Mr. Borromeo, who is the chairman of SSPF’s National Schools Athletics Council as quoted by The Hindu.
