As a sports coach or instructor, the primary job will be to provide expert training for athletes. The person will be assisting their skills development and ensuring peak performance and fitness are achieved during crucial times, such as competitions, tournaments, matches, trials and qualifying events. The difference between a sports coach and a sports instructor is minimal, and the terms are used interchangeably most of the time. However, coaches are mainly involved in identifying and nurturing talented athletes, while sports instructors are involved in providing theoretical and practical instruction in a specific sport or helping athletes to maintain their general health and fitness.

Sports development officer

Sports development officers are tasked with creating and implementing programmes, which encourage sports activity across all areas of society. In this role, the individual work alongside government authorities and private organisations, such as educational institutions, local councils, healthcare facilities, charities, and not-for-profit organisations and community groups, to put a range of appealing, exciting and valuable schemes into action.

Sports lawyer

Sports lawyers advise their clients on the legal aspects of sport, and may also represent them in court. Their work can cover commercial agreements (for example regarding sponsorship and advertising), broadcasting rights for sporting events, employment contracts, transfers, injuries, sports regulation and disciplinary matters.

Sports centre/gym manager

Fitness and leisure centre managers ensure that customers have the best possible experience and are responsible for the efficient day-to-day control of all the centre’s activities ranging from HR to marketing. They tend to every aspect of the day-to-day running of fitness and leisure centres, both as a service and as a business.
