Tokyo Olympics: Hockey Day 7 — India beat Japan 5-3 — Updates, score, results, blog
Welcome to our Live Blog coverage of the Men's Hockey Group A match between India and Japan
With their backs to the wall, the Indian women's hockey team came out fighting hard against old rivals Ireland in their fourth group match, winning the contest by a 1- 0 margin.
Ireland needed a win to enter the quarterfinals in the high-stakes game which was a repeat of the 2018 World Cup quarterfinals that the Irish Green Army won via a shootout.
It was an epic clash between two sides that took world hockey by storm in 2018. Meanwhile, the Indian men's team will be looking to carry their winning momentum forward when they take on Asian Games champions Japan.
Manpreet and co are already assured of a top-two finish in the group and have thereby booked themselves a place in Sunday's quarterfinal. Graham Reid's team would be looking to get into the groove ahead of the knock-outs in a match where they will be under no real pressure.
The Indians have not lost to Japan since 2013 and begin as firm favourites against Seigfried Aikman's side who have yet to pick up points in Tokyo. Expect a fast and entertaining encounter as the Japanese look for their first win while the Indians play their natural attacking game.
The match begins at 1500 IST
