Last night brought with itself the end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The match was contested between France and Croatia. While for France it was customary, even expected, to play in the final; their opponents reached the same stage for the first time in their history. After the match, Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh took to Twitter to laud Croatia's achievement while lamenting the inter-personal disputes that are working as a barrier in India. The World Cup in Russia came to an end with an all-European final. At the end of ninety minutes, France were crowned the Champions for the second time in their history.
Les Bleus
ran out winners after an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia, with Greizmann, Pogba, and Mbappe all on the score sheet. France's heroics also ensured that the final ended in normal time after three editions (sixteen years). However, while France were the overwhelming favorites to lift the trophy, Croatia had the backing of almost the entire world. The small nation of 41.7 lakh people had won hearts through their superb displays throughout the tournament, which included a 3-0 drubbing of contenders Argentina. At the start of the tournament, no one would have expected Croatia to reach the final and yet here they were, facing the biggest challenge of their lives. It wasn't to be, however, for the Balkan nation, as they went down 4-2 to their European counterparts. Nevertheless, Croatia's run gathered a lot of fans, a lot of them in the subcontinent. There were a lot of Tweets regarding Croatia's heroic run. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the praises, congratulating both Croatia and France.
However, the most hard-hitting tweet came from the account of Indian international cricketer Harbhajan Singh.
Singh's tweet remarked about how a nation more than a thousandth of India can achieve something as remarkable, while we ourselves are fighting over petty things. https://twitter.com/harbhajan_singh/status/1018438212849668096 Stats also compared the size and population of Croatia to that of Indian states, with the outcome that most Indian stated have more population than Croatia. In fact, Delhi in itself is almost four times that of the Balkan nation. Harbhajan's tweet amassed around four thousand retweets and sixteen thousand likes, starting a conversation about what we are doing incorrectly. As with Turkey in 2002, Ukraine in 2006, Uruguay and Ghana in 2010, Colombia in 2014, and now Croatia in 2018; the conversation has once again begun - If they can, why can't we?
