India wins the SAFF U-20 Championship 2022 title in extra-time against Bangladesh.
It was teamwork with a lot of individual brilliance which led to India's sparkling victory over Bangladesh in the SAFF U-20 Championship final. Shanmugam Venkatesh's men overcame Paul Smalley's Bangladesh with a thumping 5-2 win.
For most part of the regulation time, both teams were playing pinball with the score. Bangladesh conceded a penalty in the opening 30 seconds of the match which was calmly converted by Gurkirat Singh. Then, right at the stroke of half time, the boys clad in red equalised with Rajon's strike from inside the box.
Second half saw a B'desh side come out with more intent which showed when Shahin scored a peach of a goal to take the lead. With one of his trademark thundering strikes, Singh scored at the 60th minute to balance the scales once again.
It was in extra time when India took hold of the game by the scruff of its neck and dominated throughout. It was started by Himanshu Jangra's finesse shot which gave India the lead for the second time in the match.
From then on, it was the 'Gurkirat Singh' show as he went on to score two more goals to compete his hattrick and score four goals in the final. India's No. 9 ended the tournament as the top-scorer with a total of eight goals.
