Lockdown has led to many sporting events being delayed such as the IPL. With some of India’s top athletes under lockdown, this period has been rife with interaction between athletes of different sports. Sunil Chhetri held five memorable live sessions with some of the best players of the country in his Instagram series of interviews called Eleven on Ten.

Sunil Chhetri and Virat Kohli

The two most looked up athletes in India, Virat Kohli and Sunil Chhetri shared a casual Instagram live conversation on May 17th. The highlight of the entire live session which made rounds on the internet was Anushka Sharma calling out on Virat Kohli’s lie as the latter tried to explain to Chhetri what happened on a movie set. They also discussed lifestyle changes such as turning vegan, the many health benefits associated with it and a many questions by the Bengaluru FC captain regarding cricket history and players.

Sunil Chhetri and Sania Mirza

Once an active singles and doubles player, Sania Mirza was ranked 27th by the Women’s Tennis Association during her tennis career. She sat down with the football icon for a conversation where she spoke about her forehand being the biggest weapon against her opponents. The candid discussion also involved talks regarding motherhood and Mirza’s return to tennis after a year. She also talked about her experience in playing with Roger Federer, calling him a dream doubles partner without hesitation. Sania also spoke about winning the title on her comeback.

Sunil Chhetri and I M Vijayan

I M Vijayan, the legendary national football captain who scored 40 goals in his career spanning 1992 to 2003 was part of Chhetri’s Instagram live series. Vijayan admitted being a fan of Sunil’s work ethic and hard work and urged the youth to follow his footsteps. The former also spoke of his successful strike partnership with Bhaichung and various anecdotes with Jo Paul Ancheri. One of the greatest regrets Vijayan explained was his early retirement which led to him not being able to play with Sunil, something he envies former partner Bhaichung for.

Sunil Chhetri and Ashwini Ponnappa

The women’s doubles gold medalist who represents India in international badminton was also part of Chhetri’s series of interviews. She reflected on the many great players with whom she could play throughout her career and talked about the relations with them off the court that helped with progress during games even better. She explained the importance and necessity of a coach in badminton, especially one for doubles and also spoke on the successful partnership with fellow badminton star Jwala Gutta which earned them many medals but decided a mutual split in 2016.

Though not on Eleven on Ten, AIFF conducted a live interview which was streamed on Facebook in account of Chhetri’s 15th year of playing international football. The football star discussed the importance of keeping fit and being grounded. Sunil also answered questions asked by the fans such as “What makes Bengaluru FC great?” to which he humbly replied that every single person that was part of Bengaluru FC on screen and behind the scene were in sync, and always improved, doing their job better than last time.

These are some of the best live sessions conducted by Indian football star Sunil Chhetri during lockdown. Though sports may not have proceeded further due to the worldwide pandemic, the 35 year old made sure that he kept his fans updated constantly by providing digital amusement and exploring the many avenues of Indian sports.
