After Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal revealed his plans of launching a sports university in the national capital to hone budding talent, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) plans to develop a Centre of Excellence for sports, where players can avail of international-level coaches for training.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, officials mentioned that modalities for the centre were in progress and that the land-owning agency have tied up with the government for the same.

“Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has initiated the discussions. The DDA will talk to government agencies, including municipal bodies in the city and soon, the L-G himself will make an announcement in this regard,” said a DDA official aware of the development.

As per the talks, a world-class integrated sports complex offering facilities in sports like cricket, football, swimming, squash, badminton and tennis will be built.

“The aim is to encourage aspiring young talent and provide state-of-the-art facilities and training, enabling them to excel in the sport of their choice. The DDA may rope in coaches and trainers of international repute,” the official told The New Indian Express.

Earlier, Kejriwal had announced that the Bill to build a sports university in Delhi had been passed by the Cabinet, with 90 acres in Mundka having been earmarked by the government for the facility. It would allow sportsmen to shoot for graduate and postgraduate degrees, which would allow them to apply for jobs overseas once their playing career was over.
