CM Kejriwal announces first Sports University in India to offer degrees for sports
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that that the Delhi Government will open a 'Sports University' in the national capital as they aim to pass the bill in the winter season.
Kejriwal informed the media on Thursday that a bill has been approved by the Delhi cabinet to set up the 'Sports University' and will be further sent to Lt. Governor Anil Baijal.
The move is aimed to promote sports in the city and will also cater to the sportsperson who struggles to make an earning as they fail to get the desired results in their field. The university will offer graduation and post-graduation degrees and also doctorate the students in different sports in order to give them 'dignity'.
"This will give dignity to the sportsperson," the Chief Minister said. Addressing a press conference, Arvind Kejriwal said:
Earlier the sportspersons used to feel insecure about their future but under this university, they will be able to devote all of their time to sports. They will get graduate degrees in different sports like cricket, hockey, football and so on. Through their degree, they will be able to apply for any government job which has graduation as the eligibility criteria. They will be able to give exams like civil services.
The Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia revealed that the 'Sports University' will be set up on the 90 acre land in the Mundka area in Delhi.
Today, the anxiety in the mind of all those sportspersons who want to make their name and bring laurels to the country in their
respective sports will go away. Now, their sport will be their subject of higher studies," Sisodia told the media.
Arvind Kejriwal also informed that his government will take the responsibility to appoint a decorated spokesperson as the vice-chancellor of the university.
Speaking about whether this concept is first of its kind, the Chief Minister said, "Delhi is recognized all over the world for one of its kind initiatives. Installation of 3 lakh cameras and 2 lakh street lights are some of the initiatives launched for the first time all across the world. This will be the first university to provide formal education in sports. We have come up with a different concept altogether, it is not just about the promotion of sports, but it is about formalizing sports and making them a part of the main curriculum of a student."
