Weightlifting, Women's 48kg: The last days of Mirabai Chanu

These are the final days of the 48kg-49kg division for Mirabai Chanu, who has for long dominated the category.

Her Olympic medal five years ago in Tokyo had come in 49kg, whereas her only World Championships gold has been in 48kg back in 2017.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games and the upcoming 2026 Asian Games two months down the line will surely be the last we see of Mirabai in these categories.

She'll now be forced to bulk up to the 53kg weight class after 49kg was dropped from the Olympic roster for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

53kg will be the lowest weightlifting category for women at the LA Games.

Putul Sonowal will return for his fourth men's singles Section D match at the Commonwealth Games 2026 against Malta's Shaun James Parnis at 7:15 p.m. IST.

After suffering a straight sets defeat to Malaysia in his previous match, Putul is currently third in the section, while Parnis is second. The match is a must win for him, as a defeat will end his hopes of reaching the semi finals and keep him out of medal contention.

The action in women's 48kg weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu's event, is underway at SEC Armadillo.

The Indian will be in action a bit later, since she has the highest registered start lift at 82kg.

Mirabai Chanu was the flag bearer for India at the 2026 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony along with Lovlina Borgohain.

The two women from Northeast carrying the Indian flag together, created a powerful image before the start of the Games.

Weightlifting, Women's 48kg: Mirabai Chanu in action

The event, quite possibly, the entire nation was waiting for at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Mirabai Chanu, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medallist, will be in action in a short while.

Chanu, owner of three Commonwealth Games medals, including two gold medals in the last two editions will be the favourite to complete a three-peat at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow tonight!

Chanu, by far, has the highest registered start list for both snatch and clean and jerk. This should, ideally, be a cakewalk for the Indian even if she is at the half of her best.

Tapan almost matched his qualifying round performance of 11.700 points in Horizontal Bar, but overall he is trailing behind in his qualifying score and is almost out of the podium race.

He also dropped down in the overall standings and is currently 13th among the 18 performers who have completed four rotations.

Weightlifting, Men's 60Kg Final: Rishikanta Singh is first male weightlifter from Manipur to win a CWG medal

Rishikanta wins the silver medal in the men's 60kg discipline with a total of 264 Kg (121 Snatch + 143 C&J) in the final, just behind Malaysia's Aniq Kasdan (273 kg).

The 28-year-old Indian also created a new National and Commonwealth Games Record in the Snatch with his lift of 121 Kg, improving his personal best in men's 60 kg by 1 Kg.

This was India's first medal in weightlifting and the second overall medal, after the men's heavyweight para powerlifting bronze medal from Jhandu Kumar.

Tapan couldn't repeat his qualifying round performance of 12.700 points in the Parallel Bars, scoring only 12.450 points in the final.

With this, he also dropped down in the overall standings and is currently 11th among the 14 performers who have completed three rotations.
