India once again had a packed schedule on Day 8 of the Commonwealth Games 2026, with the spotlight firmly on athletics as Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra began his campaign in the men's javelin throw qualification.
India added two more medals to its tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday as Lovepreet Singh claimed silver in the men's +110kg weightlifting before Seema Kaliramna capped off the day with bronze in the women's discus throw.
Meanwhile, Tejaswin Shankar ended the opening day of the decathlon in second place, keeping himself firmly in medal contention.
Animesh Kujur missed the men's 200m final after clocking 20.65s in the semi-finals, while Vishal TK bowed out in the men's 400m semi-finals.
In the final athletics event of the night, Parul Chaudhary finished 13th in the women's 5,000m final, clocking 15:08.56, the second-fastest time of her career.

Both Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav improved their mark on their second attempt, keeping them within the top 12.
Rohit is currently in 6th place, while Yashvir is in 9th place.

Athletics, Men's Decathlon 100m: Tejaswin Shankar clocks 10.96s in 100m
Not a very good start for Tejaswin, who clocked 10.96s in a wind-aided (+3.5) 100m heat 2.
He earned 870 points for this event and is now in 7th position after the first of 10 events.

Neeraj Chopra is set to return to the Commonwealth Games after 8 years, since winning the title at the Gold Coast 2018.
He will start his campaign with the qualification round alongside two other Indians, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh, at 2:55 PM IST.
The automatic qualification mark is set at 84m, from which 12 athletes will qualify in the 18-man qualifying field.
The field is packed with world-class javelin throwers, including reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem (PAK), reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott (T&T), two-time world champion Anderson Peters (GRN), Julius Yego (KEN), and world lead Rumesh Pathirage (SRI).

Athletics, Men's Decathlon 100m: Tejaswin Shankar in action
After a heartbreaking injury withdrawal from the high jump competition, Tejaswin is now returning for the men's decathlon event, starting with the 100m race at 2:40 PM.
It remains to be seen whether he has fully recovered from his injury, as the decathlon is an extremely demanding event that requires athletes to compete in ten different track and field disciplines.
He will start with the 100m heat 2 alongside a few of the elite decathletes, incuding two time Olympic medalist Damian Warner of Canada.

Murali Sreeshankar led the charge by winning a historic silver in the men's long jump with a leap of 8.09m, becoming the first Indian to claim two Commonwealth Games medals in the event. Soon after, Dilip Gavit struck gold in the men's 100m T47, while Mohammed Basil secured bronze to complete India's first-ever double podium finish in the event.
In boxing, it was a flawless outing as Sakshi Chaudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal, Narender Berwal, and Jaismine Lamboria all advanced to the semi-finals, assuring themselves of at least bronze medals. They joined Lovlina Borgohain, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas, and Jadumani Singh, taking India's tally of assured boxing medals to 10.
Elsewhere, Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh Tamilarasan progressed to the men's 400m hurdles final, while Suyash Jadhav narrowly missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in the men's S7 50m freestyle.
