India once again had a packed schedule on Day 8 of the Commonwealth Games 2026, with the spotlight firmly on athletics as Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra began his campaign in the men's javelin throw qualification.
India added two more medals to its tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday as Lovepreet Singh claimed silver in the men's +110kg weightlifting before Seema Kaliramna capped off the day with bronze in the women's discus throw.
Meanwhile, Tejaswin Shankar ended the opening day of the decathlon in second place, keeping himself firmly in medal contention.
Animesh Kujur missed the men's 200m final after clocking 20.65s in the semi-finals, while Vishal TK bowed out in the men's 400m semi-finals.
In the final athletics event of the night, Parul Chaudhary finished 13th in the women's 5,000m final, clocking 15:08.56, the second-fastest time of her career.

End 2 completely belonged to India, as they took the lead from the very first bowl. Botswana tried to change the game but were unsuccessful, allowing India to add five more points to their lead.

End 1 was a closely fought one, with almost all the bowls reaching near the jack. However, India had the bowl closest to the jack, taking one point and an early lead in the game.

Athletics, Men's Javelin Throw: For the first time in 8 years, Neeraj hasn't qualified directly
Neeraj Chopra qualified for the men's javelin throw final with a 79.61m by being fifth in the rankings.
The windy conditions in Glasgow played a part, as Neeraj's eight-year streak of qualifying by hitting the automatic qualification mark with his first attempt is broken.

Weightlifting, Women's 86kg: Martina should be in a good stead
The snatch discipline has been an issue for Martina Devi Maibam. She is more comfortable with clean and jerk in general.
Now that she has at least one successful lift in snatch, Martina should be in a good stead for a medal with a good outing in clean and jerk.
My colleague Deepanshu tells that, Martina had three no lifts in snatch at 107kg at the recent Asian Weightlifting Championships in May, which was held in Ahmedabad.

India returns for its third match after registering back to back victories against Namibia and the Cook Islands.
The Indian pair of Navneet Singh (Lead) and Dinesh Kumar (Skip) will now take on Botswana, represented by Kaizer Geche (Lead) and Charles Diteko (Skip). The match will begin at 7:30 PM IST.
India will hope to continue its winning run and remain a strong contender for a place in the semi finals.

With a start weight of 105 in snatch and 140kg in snatch, she is a medal contender in this event. It won't be easy though.

Athletics, Men's Decathlon Shot Put: Tejaswin Shankar attains a distance of 13.09m; finishes 7th
Tejaswin produced another average performance, recording a best throw of 13.09m in his three attempts to finish the shot put event in 7th place.
The effort earned him 673 points, which further dropped him to 5th place in the overall standings after three events, with a total of 2,558 points.
