Javelin pierces 11-year-old's skull, leaves him paralysed

In yet another freak accident, an 11-year-old boy was left severely injured after a javelin hit his head and pierced his skull during a sports event at his school.

As reported by the Times of India, Sourajit Bera, a class VI student at Nayan Chandra Vidyapith School, was a participant at his school's annual sports day event in Howrah's Shyampur. The school's headmaster Arunava Bajani informed that Sourajit had suddenly entered the ground where the javelin throw event was being held. That is when a javelin had hit him on the head and penetrated through his skull.

Soon after he was hit by the Javelin, the school authorities rushed him to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. The doctors at the hospital performed a 90-min long surgery and removed the sharp wooden object. However, the injury has left Sourajit partially paralysed with the left side of his body not responding. He is now being kept in the hospital for further observation.

A few days back a similar incident had occurred at a SAI extension centre in Chabua in upper Assam when an arrow had hit 12-year-old archer Shivangini Gohain on her head. She was airlifted to AIIMS, New Delhi, where the doctors managed to remove the arrow and save her life.

The same, unfortunately, can not be said about the 17-year-old Kerala youngster who was hit by a hammer throw and subsequently, lost his life a few months back. The incident had taken place during the 63rd Kerala State Junior Athletics Championship being held at the municipal stadium in Pala. The death had shaken the entire sports fraternity in the country.
