Indian governments' tyranny over sports and their lack of ample support and enthusiasm for the games keep showing up every now and then. Yet another mishandled assurance from the government showed up yesterday. On Sunday, international archer V Jyothi Surekha voiced out her protest in Vijayawada at the officials of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) for having reduced the cash incentive which was announced earlier to her by the State government. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had announced in the month of August 2017, a cash incentive of 1 crore, a 500 sq.ft of land in Vijayawada and Group-I posting to the international archer in honor of her receiving the prestigious
Arjuna Award
from President Ram Nath Kovind. However, as irksome as it could be, a few days ago, the State government issued a Government Order stating that it will give only 61.53 lakhs out of the 1 crore promised to Surekha and the remaining 15 lakhs will be given to Cherukuri Satyanarayana for 'coaching' the archer. The international archer stated that Satyanarayana was not her coach. V Jyothi Surekha told The Tribune on Sunday, 'Satyanarayana had never trained me and the credit has been wrongly attributed to him. Right from my childhood, I underwent training under J Rama Rao and since 2013, I was in the Indian camp under the training of Jeevan Jyoti Singh Teja.'
She further told the press, 'In 2012, I played a championship in the USA with the financial support from the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA). From then, I have won medals in various national and international fixtures. How can the SAAP officials deduct the cash incentive announced by the Chief Minister without any prior intimation?' The Arjuna award-winning archer's father, V Surendra suspected that a few SAAP officials had entered into a compromise with Satyanarayana and sanctioned a part of the cash incentive to him. Surendra told the press, 'If such is the case, how can Surekha represent the State in the coming fixtures?' He further added, 'Naidu should immediately intervene in the issue or else, we don't have any other option but to launch an indefinite hunger strike until the justice is done.' V Jyothi Surekha was a bronze medallist at the recently-held World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai, China. She has voiced out the injustice shown to her and has threatened the government that she would start off on a hunger strike if the truth is not addressed and justice is not met. Hopefully, this time the government does understand the seriousness of the issue and remove itself from the red-tapist culture of Indian governance.
