No more than 44 Indian athletes will participate in the Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday in view of the COVID-19 threat. The athletes who have competitions lined up the next day have already been told to skip the event. With six officials, the total Indian presence during the march past would add up to 50.

Two athletes who are residing at the Tokyo Olympic Games village have tested positive for the deadly Covid-19, as per media reports. They are the first athletes to test positive in the village and their names have not been revealed.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur picked up the famous line from Bollywood blockbuster 'Uri' in giving an unprecedented send-off to the first batch of India's Olympic-bound athletes, for whom a red carpet was laid out at the airport on Saturday. Amid loud cheers, claps and plenty of good wishes at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, athletes from the eight disciplines of archery, badminton, table tennis, hockey, judo, gymnastics, swimming and weightlifting boarded the flight to Tokyo.

A contingent of 88 members, which includes 54 athletes besides support staff and IOA representatives, departed for the Japanese capital on Saturday night to participate in the COVID-hit Tokyo Games, which will begin in a week's time on July 23.
