Sheetal Devi wins her first individual title at the World Archery Para Series

Indian ace Sheetal Devi clinched her first women’s compound individual title at the World Archery Para Series in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, the third leg of the inaugural edition.

After finishing runner-up in the previous two stages in Thailand and Czechia, Sheetal finally broke the barrier in front of a home crowd by defeating Kazakhstan’s Aizada Seidan in the final.

The reigning world champion came from behind in the last end to force a shoot-off after the scores were tied at 144. She then shot an inner-ten in the shoot-off, compared to Seidan’s nine, to seal the victory.

Sheetal was India’s only individual champion at the tournament. Overall, Indian archers finished with 15 medals — 4 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze.

Four more individual bronze medals went to India in Paralympic events: Sarita (women’s compound), Toman Kumar (men’s compound), Bhawna Choudhary (women’s recurve) and Swati Chaudhary (W1 women).

Earlier in the day, the Indian para mixed recurve team of Harvinder Singh and Bhawna Choudhary won their second consecutive Para Series title with a dominant 6-0 victory over China.
