Yamini Mourya wins judo silver at CWG 2026 after golden score defeat

India's Yamini Mourya claimed the silver medal in the women's 57kg judo event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after going down to England's Acelya Toprak in a closely fought final on Friday.

The bout remained scoreless throughout regulation before Toprak emerged victorious in golden score, with Mourya conceding three penalties during an extended extra-time period.

Penalties decide closely fought final

Mourya made an aggressive start, attempting an arm throw early in the contest, but Toprak defended well and prevented the Indian from gaining an advantage.

The English judoka looked to dictate the pace with a series of attacking moves, but Mourya stood firm, neutralising every attempt to force the match into golden score.

Neither athlete managed to register a scoring move during regulation, leading to a tense extra-time battle.

The golden score period stretched beyond three minutes as both judokas continued to search for an opening. However, Mourya accumulated three penalties for passivity, resulting in a disqualification that handed the victory and gold medal to Toprak.

The silver medal nevertheless marked another impressive result for India on a memorable day in judo.

Earlier in the competition, Mourya had produced a series of strong performances to reach the final and guarantee herself a place on the podium. Her medal came after Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh had won historic gold medals in the women's 48kg and men's 60kg categories respectively.

Mourya's runner-up finish added another medal to India's tally and underlined the country's growing strength in judo at the Commonwealth Games, with Indian judokas producing their best-ever performance at the event in Glasgow.
