The Indian men's hockey team were up against New Zealand in the fourth match of the 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia, on Thursday.
India, fresh from a narrow 4-3 win against hosts Malaysia, was aiming to continue their winning momentum against New Zealand, which hasn't lost a single match before today.
India ended their winning run with a 3-2 win in this fourth pool match to jump to the top of the league table.
As it happened:
India survived yet another scare at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, after allowing their 2-goal to slip away early on in the final quarter with Baker's penalty corner conversion.
But then, Karthi Selvam's composed finish in the final 7 minutes got India back in the lead, which they maintained to hold on till the final whistle and clinch the match.
With the win, India is now at the top of the Points Table with 9 points from 4 games and is very likely to qualify for the final.
India 3-2 New Zealand
India found their first field goal of the match as Dilpreet made a brilliant pass to Karthi Selvam, who was standing unmarked in a one-on-one position with the goalkeeper.
Karthi made no mistake and circled around the goalkeeper to find the back of the net and take India back in the lead.
India 2-2 New Zealand
George Baker completed his brace within five minutes after converting a brilliantly taken Penalty corner on the variation.
New Zealand's first man faked a shot to pass it, Baker at the second battery, who had a lot of time to take a shot and find the bottom left corner.
Indian captain, Sanjay, was standing in the left corner, but the strike came awkwardly to him, and he wasn't able to save it, and the ball went into the net with a deflection from him.
India 2-1 New Zealand
New Zealand committed the numbers in India's penalty circle, putting pressure on their defence, and then Finn Ward's brilliant run to breach the defensive wall helped them score a goal.
Find made a gutsy run in the Indian circle and then assisted Baker, who chipped it over the Indian goalkeeper, who had already committed to the ground.

Both goalkeepers, India's Pawan and New Zealand's Hayward stepping up their game and stopping multiple penalty corner opportunities for both teams.
India had two conversions from the penalty corners so far, whereas New Zealand has none from their 7.

After a tiring second quarter, the Indian team decided to start the third quarter on the front foot, which eventually resulted in a penalty corner.
Captain Sanjay converted the drag-flick and gave India a sigh of relief, maintaining their 100 per cent conversion on the penalty corner today.
New Zealand dominated the second quarter, having 9 circle penetrations, compared to India's just one.
They have also won three penalty corners, but India held on to their defence and kept the scoreline unchanged.

The Black Sticks start the second quarter on the same aggressive note and also win their first penalty corner of the match.
They, however, failed to convert the penalty corner, and India maintains its lead.
After an early pressure from New Zealand, India looked like a better team and also converted their best and only chance of the quarter into a goal.
Although the first quarter saw a bit of end-to-end action with both teams, having four circle penetrations each, none of the attacks looked very dangerous.
