FIH Pro League LIVE: India scored twice in the fourth quarter to beat New Zealand 4-3 in the opening game of the FIH Men's Hockey Pro league 2022-2023 on Friday in Bhubaneswar. Mandeep Singh scores twice in the final 15 minutes as India came back from a two-goal deficit to get the winning goal with three minutes left on the clock.
As it happened:
Pathak saves. Another PC. 29 seconds left. Rohidas gets a deflection. Another PC. 25 seconds left.
And the buzzer goes. India have won 4-3. From being 1-3 down, they have made a thrilling comeback! Mandeep Singh the saviour for India in the 4th quarter.
India drop back with everything they have in the final two minutes. NZ throw hook, line and sinker into it too. And they earn a PC with 30 seconds left on the clock.
Mandeep Singh fires in a rocket from the right! GOAL! It's 4-3 to India with 3 minutes left. Mandeep gave that shot his everything. The 4th quarter specialist strikes again! He's scored 46 of his 90 goals in the 4th quarter.
Mandeep Mor and Mandeep Singh combine with magical effect! India get their equalizer in the 53rd minute. Then Dilpreet advances towards goal with dangerous intent. Suddenly, India are roaring!
It's 3-3 with 7 minutes left!
Krishan Pathak pulls off a superman save as NZ attack through PCs in the final quarter. And NZ keep attacking. Pathak now makes a save with his outstretched foot. Less than 10 minutes for India to get a point out of this.
A flurry of PCs for New Zealand as the third quarter winds down. Sreejesh saves! It's down to one goal as the hooter goes for the penultimate time.
It's 3-2 to New Zealand with 15 minutes left.
Kalinga Stadium is silenced. New Zealand look to slow the pace of the game down.
Mandeep is felled inside the Kiwi circle, and India get a penalty stroke! Harmanpreet steps up...and scores! India score, it's 3-2 to NZ now.
All falling apart for India! Surender concedes a soft Penalty corner as an inside edge off his stick strikes his foot. And the resultant PC is turned in into goal by Lane as Sreejesh is left off-balance in goal.
India, leading 1-0 in Q1, now trail 1-3 in Q3.
5 minutes into the 2nd half, Jacob Smith prostrates himself inside the Indian circle and gets a touch as the ball goes in. Sreejesh left rooted at his spot. India go behind in this match for the first time.
"We controlled the game in the first quarter, but we let the game slip away in the second quarter. We let the basics slip, like tight marking," says India coach Graham Reid at the half-time break.
The 3rd quarter gets underway. New Zealand get us started, but it's India - and Abhishek again - who get the first attack of the half.
