The exciting Asian football club competition kickstarted for India as East Bengal FC took on Altyn Asyr of Turkmenistan in the preliminary stage of Asian Champions League-2 on Wednesday.

The ISL club was returning to Asia after a long gap of nine years, sighting to make it to the group stage of this second-tier club competition of Asian Football.

East Bengal was the host of the match as they took on Altyn Asyr at the Salt Lake Stadium of Kolkata at 7:00 PM IST.

The winner of this single-leg play-off match progressed to the group stage of the competition.

East Bengal played a better game in the second half of the match but still couldn't find a much-required equalizer.

They had a very good start to the half but conceded another goal against the run of play because of a defensive mistake.

Saul Crespo pulled them back in the match with a great individual goal but it wasn't enough for them to win the match or force an extra time.

With this loss, East Bengal's journey at AFC Champions League-2 is over at the Preliminary round.

But they will continue their run in Asia as they are demoted to the group stage of the third tier, the AFC Challenge League.
