India will look to build on a productive fourth day when competition resumes at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Monday, with the start of the highly anticipated athletics and para athletics programme.
Sunday belonged to India's weightlifters. Mirabai Chanu scripted history by clinching her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women's 48kg event, while Rishikanta Singh Chanambam and Raja Muthupandi added silver medals in the men's 60kg and 65kg categories respectively, taking India's medal tally to four medals, one gold, two silver and one bronze.
Attention now shifts to the track and field, where India will begin its athletics campaign with Gurindervir Singh in the men's 100m heats, Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Sathyanathan in the men's long jump qualification, and Tejas Shirse in the 110m hurdles.
The evening session promises multiple medal opportunities.
Weightlifting will once again be a major medal avenue, with Bindyarani Devi (women's 58kg), Gyaneshwari Yadav (women's 53kg) and Ajaya Babu Valluri (men's 79kg) taking the platform.
LIVE Updates from day 5:
The Indian national record holder faltered in the heats, as he was dropped from the top 17 and hence knocked out of the competition.
He clocked 10.39s, 0.30s slower than his historic national record of 10.09s. He is currently in 24th position with one more heat still to go.
Sajan clocked the sixth-best time in the heats (1:58.59s), which was enough to qualify for the 8-man final scheduled for 1:44 AM post-midnight on 27th July.
He has already bettered his 9th-place finish from the last edition of the games at Birmingham 2022 and will now aim to improve his position further in the final.
Sajan Prakash clocks a time of 1:58.59s in heat 2, finishing in second place just behind 8-time Olympic medalist Duncan Scott of Scotland, who clocked 1:58.29s.
The experienced Indian was leading at the 100m mark, but Duncan made a late push and just edged out the Indian.
Sajan is currently in 4th place in the overall standings with 8 athletes to go to the final, with 1 more heat to go.
Murali Sreeshankar needed just one jump to book his place in the men's long jump final at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
The Indian produced a superb 8.01m effort with his opening attempt to breach the automatic qualifying mark of 8.00m, sealing his place in the final without requiring any further jumps.
Gurindervir Singh finished second in Heat 4 of the men's 100m preliminary round, clocking 10.39 seconds behind Jamaica's Rohan Watson, who won the race in 10.13 seconds.
After the completion of four of the 11 heats, Gurindervir is ninth overall. With 17 fastest athletes across all heats progressing to the semifinals, the Indian will now have to wait for the remaining seven heats to determine whether his time is enough to secure qualification.
Indian national record holder Gurindervir Singh will be in action at the men's 100m heats at 2:55 PM IST.
He will be in heat 4 and has the 2nd-best Personal Best (10.09s) in his heat. There are no automatic qualifiers, and hence the 17 fastest men across 11 heats will qualify from the preliminary round.
These 17 athletes will join the 7 men who have already earned a bye in the semi-finals because of their comparatively higher personal bests.
Here is the start list:
Indian veteran swimmer Sajan Prakash will begin his campaign in Glasgow with the 200m Butterfly heats at 3:00 PM IST.
He has the 8th-best entry time (1:57.09s) among the 20-man field and will be hoping to reach the final.
He is in heat 2 alongside 8-time Olympic medalist Duncan Scott of Scotland, which could help him to push his limits and clock a seaosn best timing.
Here is the start list:
