Elaine Thompson-Herah and Marie-Josee Ta Lou make headlines

Elaine Thompson-Herah and Marie-Josee Ta Lou set the tone in the morning session as they finished with a time of 10.82s and 10.78s. While Jamaican icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price wasn't far behind and she herself set a time of 10.84s. The Jamaican would be wary of the threat from the two athletes and would be looking to improve in the semifinals. 

In the 3000m men's Steeplechase event,  Lamecha Girma was on the top of the rankings followed by Ryuji Miura in the second at the end of the heats.

Benjamin Kigen and Abraham Kibiwot from Nigeria finished third and fourth respectively.
