BAI Secretary General Sanjay Mishra confirmed on Sunday that India plans to shift the 2028 India Open to Guwahati for security reasons, as the dates clash with Republic Day.
The 2027 edition will remain at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Arena in New Delhi in February, while the 2028 tournament is scheduled to be held from 25 to 30 January.
"The 2028 India Open will be held in the last week of January, and due to the tournament dates clashing with Republic Day security arrangements in the National capital, we felt that only for that year, we should shift the tournament to Guwahati. It will return to New Delhi in 2029," said Sanjay Mishra.
He also confirmed that India has submitted a bid to host the 2028 Thomas & Uber Cup, though confirmation from the BWF is still awaited. The Indira Gandhi Arena would be the preferred venue if the bid is successful.
Mishra further noted that the successful staging of the 2026 BWF World Championships has silenced all critics following the India Open and demonstrated India’s capability to host major global events.
