Badminton Asia Junior C'ships: 6 Indian shuttlers enter quarter-final

Four players in singles category and the U15 boys doubles pair progressed to the quarters of the event in Chengdu, China

Young Indian shuttlers had a mixed day at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships 2024 in Chengdu, China as India managed to win only five quarterfinal spots on Thursday.

Four of these came in the singles category whereas the U15 boys doubles pairing of Rahul Kadapakula and Vedant Pahwa is the only Indian representation in the doubles category.

The young boys doubles pairing pulled off an upset in the round of 16 to knock out the top-seeded Vietnamese pairing of Phuoc Le Phap Nguyen and Quang Minh Nguyen, 21-12, 21-19.

They will now face Yu Xiang Chen and En Chi Kao of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals on Friday, sighting a medal confirmation for India in this category.

Top seed Tanvi Patri into quarters

In the U15 women's singles category, top-seeded Tanvi Patri of India continued her good form and progressed to the last 8 with a straight-game (21-9, 21-18) win over Thailand's Sarisa Janpeng.

This is the second consecutive straight-game win for the youngster, who is now just one win away from the medal. She will take on seventh-seed Chinese Shuttler, Shu Jie Cheng in the quarters tomorrow.

On the other hand, Shaina Manimuthu missed out on the quarterfinal spot after losing a tough three-game (20-22, 21-17, 13-21) match against second Thi Thu Huyen Nguyen of Vietnam.

Success in U17 Category

Three Indian U17 shuttles progressed to the quarterfinals of the U17 category on Thursday.

Firstly, fourth-seeded Tanvi Reddy got better of her opponent in a straight-game affair. She took a 21-13, 21-13 win over Thailand's Janyaporn Meepanthong in the round of 16.

She will now face a Chinese opponent, Sun Yi Fei, in the quarterfinals. The winner of this match will confirm a medal.

Meanwhile, in the men's U17 category, two Indian shuttles, Abhinav Garg and Tankar Gnana Dattu Talasila confirmed their ticket in the quarter-finals.

Abhinav took a comfortable straight-game (21-14, 21-9) win over Shai Shing Chuang of Hong Kong whereas second-seeded Talasila took three games to win against China's Luo Jing Ju (21-17, 15-21,21-18).

Both Abhinav and Talasila will now take on the opponent from Chinese Taipei in their respective quarterfinal matches tomorrow.
