Gulveer Singh kicked off his season with a remarkable performance by setting a new national record in the men’s indoor 3000m short track event at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, United States on Saturday morning (IST).
Gulveer clocked 7:38.26 to shatter a 17-year-old record set by Surender Singh (7:49.47) in 2008, beating it by more than 10 seconds.
This was Gulveer's first 3000m short track event in almost a year, his last appearance being at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran on February 19, 2024. Although he had clinched the gold medal with a timing of 8:07.48, he was later stripped of the title due to lane infringement.
The Asian Games and Asian Championships bronze medallist finished second in Boston, behind Romain Legendre, who clocked 7:36.28s.
In November last year, Gulveer set a new national record in the men’s 10,000m event at Japan's Hachioji Long Distance 2024 athletics meet. His time was nearly 27 seconds faster than his previous national record of 27:41.81, set earlier in California, surpassing Surender Singh’s 2008 mark of 28:02.89.
Gulveer also holds the national record in the 5,000m race. In September, he shaved seven seconds off his 5000m national record in Japan, winning the race in 13:11.82s.
