Neeraj Chopra to miss 2026 Asian Games due to injury

India's two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra will miss the upcoming 2026 Asian Games after sustaining a ligament injury on his ankle.

Chopra, who had registered a season best 88.05m throw to finish second at the Lausanne Diamond League last week, picked up the injury during a training session.

The two-time reigning Asian Games champion revealed that he has decided to pull out of the 2026 season altogether after consultation with his doctor and team.

"After a period of hard work, I finally felt I was gaining momentum I had been looking for with a Season's best throw in Lausanne.

"Unfortunately, shortly after, I sustained a ligament tear in my ankle during training," Chopra said in a social media post.

"After discussions with my doctor and team, we've decided that I will sit out the rest of this season," he added.

Chopra's decision to end his season means that he'll also miss the 2026 Diamond League Final for which he had qualified earlier this week and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships, which he was in line to qualify for.

"It's disappointing, especially because I felt close to finding my rhythm. But as they say, setbacks are a part of the journey," wrote Chopra.

"My focus now is on recovering well and coming back even stronger," he added.
