Asian Games 2026: Elavenil wins two silvers as India assures more medals in MMA, cricket - Highlights

India enjoyed a productive day at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, September 20, winning two silver medals in shooting and assuring medals in MMA and women’s cricket.

Elavenil Valarivan was at the centre of India’s medal haul, winning silver in the women’s 10m air rifle individual event and then helping the Indian women’s team secure another silver alongside Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod. Elavenil scored 252.4 in the individual final, finishing behind Japan’s Hinata Taichi.

India also made history in MMA as Suchika Tariyal defeated Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women’s Traditional 60kg quarterfinal, assuring India its first-ever Asian Games MMA medal.

In cricket, the Indian women’s team stormed into the gold medal match with a 114-run win over Bangladesh. Shafali Verma smashed an unbeaten 100 off 49 balls as India posted 195/4 before bowling Bangladesh out for 81.

Elsewhere, India’s women’s hockey team thrashed Uzbekistan 19-0, while the men defeated Indonesia 13-1. The women’s badminton team also advanced with a 3-0 win over Kazakhstan.

India will return to action on Monday with more medal opportunities.

Medals won

Shooting: Elavenil Valarivan won silver in the women's 10m air rifle individual event, finishing with 252.4 points. It is India's first-ever Asian Games silver in this event.

Shooting: India's Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod won silver in the women's 10m air rifle team event with a combined 1898 points.

Medals assured

MMA: Suchika Tariyal defeated Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women's traditional 60kg quarterfinal to assure India its first-ever Asian Games MMA medal.

Cricket: India's women's team defeated Bangladesh by 114 runs in the semifinal to secure a medal and book a place in the gold medal match against Sri Lanka.

Women's Hockey: India opened their campaign with a massive 19-0 win over Uzbekistan. Deepika Sehrawat scored eight goals, a record for an Indian woman in an Asian Games hockey match according to the live report.

Men's Hockey: India began their campaign with a dominant 13-1 win over Indonesia.

Badminton: India defeated Kazakhstan 3-0 in the women's team Round of 16. PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma won their singles matches. India face Japan in the quarterfinals.

Women's Table Tennis: India beat Indonesia 3-0 in their opening Group F tie, then defeated Singapore 3-2 in a thriller. Yashaswini Ghorpade sealed the Singapore win in the decider.

Men's Table Tennis: India opened with a 3-0 win over Indonesia, with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah winning their matches. India lost 0-3 to Iran in their second Group F tie. Noshad Alamiyan beat Manush Shah 3-0, 16-year-old Benyamin Faraji beat Manav Thakkar 3-0, and Nima Alamian beat Harmeet Desai 3-2.

Swimming: Rishabh Das reached the men's 100m backstroke final and finished sixth in the final with 54.77s. Rohit Benediction finished 12th in the men's 100m freestyle heats, while Akash Mani was 23rd.

Wushu: Suraj Singh Mayanglambam finished 11th in the men's Changquan final with 9.683 points.

Teqball: Quimcy D'Souza missed out on a medal in women's singles, losing the bronze-medal match to Japan's Yuina Sakamoto 11-12, 11-12.

Teqball: Quimcy D'Souza and Mohamed Anas Baig also lost the mixed doubles bronze-medal match to Vietnam 9-12, 6-12. Quimcy was carrying a back injury during the match.

Men's Team Group Stage: India suffered a 0-3 defeat to Iran in their Group F tie at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Noshad Alamiyan def. Manush Shah 11-3, 11-8, 12-10

Benyamin Faraji def. Manav Thakkar 11-2, 11-6, 11-6

Nima Alamian def. Harmeet Desai 12-10, 13-15, 11-3, 10-12, 11-2

Iran sealed the tie after winning all three games played, leaving India with a 0-1 record in Group F.

Harmeet Desai vs Nima Alamian, Alamian wins Match 5!

Match 5: Nima Alamian closes out the decider 11-2 against Harmeet Desai to win the match 3-2. Harmeet fought back twice to force the deciding match, but Alamian dominated the final stretch. Iran now lead 3-0 in the team tie.
