Delhi Court calls Brij Bhushan Singh's sexual harassment allegations ‘political’

The Delhi court that acquitted former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last week, stated that the allegations against him were political in nature on Sunday.

Brij Bhushan and his aide Vinod Tomar were on trial for a sexual harassment case filed by women wrestlers. The FIR was registered only after the Supreme Court’s intervention in May 2023.

According to Bar and Bench, the court described the wrestlers’ sexual harassment case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh as “false and fabricated” and “politically motivated.”

The court also observed that the allegations were made collectively at the instance of a woman wrestler who accused Singh of sexual harassment, a male wrestler, and coaches of Mahadev Academy, as part of a “deep conspiracy.”

Three years ago, some of India's top wrestlers like Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat and others sat in a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for days, demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan for sexually harassing several women wrestlers, including a minor.

After the Delhi Court acquitted Brij Bhushan Singh last week, Vinesh Phogat said in her official social media post that they'll appeal against the decision.

"The female wrestlers have instructed their lawyers to appeal this decision, and this will be done as soon as possible. We have not lost hope, and the wrestlers will continue their fight," she said.
