WPL 2025: Mumbai Indians ease past Gujarat Giants for first win – Talking Points
Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews starred for Mumbai Indians.

The inaugural champions Mumbai Indians registered their first win of the 2025 Women's Premier League as they eased past a struggling Gujarat Giants at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Tuesday.
Mumbai Indians bowled out Gujarat Giants for a meagre 120 after opting to bowl first. Hayley Matthews starred with a three-wicket haul.
They then chased down the target with five wickets in hand and just under four overs to spare with Natalie Sciver-Brunt notching up a half-century.
Here are the talking points from the match:
Sciver-Brunt too hot to handle
Sciver-Brunt continued her good run of form in the 2025 WPL, registering her second consecutive half-century in as many matches.
She entered the crease with Mumbai Indians struggling at 22/1 in the fourth over and by the time she was prized out by the young Priya Mishra, they needed only seven more runs to win.
Sciver-Brunt's innings was laced with 11 boundaries as she brought up her half-century off just 33 deliveries. She did not take any big risks in the innings and instead bisected the fields with ease to take Mumbai Indians closer to the target.
But it was not just with bat in hand that Sciver-Brunt tormented the Gujarat Giants.
Earlier in the day, she picked up the wickets of Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner – two of the most dangerous batters in the Giants lineup. She finished with figures of 2-26 in her four overs.
Hayley Matthews gets the purple cap
Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hayley Matthews picked up the purple cap at the end of the first innings, thanks to her spell of 3-16 in four overs to dismantle the Giants' batting lineup.
Matthews' wickets included Dayalan Hemalatha, Kashvee Gautam, and Simran Shaikh.
Though her struggles with the bat while opening the innings continued, the West Indian now has five wickets in just two matches and owns the Purple Cap for most wickets in the season.
Kamalini - youngest-ever debutant
G Kamalini became the youngest debutant in the Women's Premier League history when she took the field for the Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.
Though her services weren't required much in the contest, the 16-year-old from India's 2025 ICC U-19 World Cup winning squad, hit a boundary of the only ball she faced in the match.
Kamalini entered the field when Mumbai Indians lost Sciver-Brunt in the 16th over of the chase. The south paw pounced on a wide googly from Mishra and cut it to the boundary square of the wicket to announce her arrival in style.
At 16 years and 213 days, Kamalini went past the record of Shabnam Shakil, who had made her debut at the age of 16 years and 263 days for the Giants in the inaugural edition of the league.
