Commonwealth Games 2026: Lovepreet Singh settles for silver in men's +110kg
The Indian heavyweight set national and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch before New Zealand's David Liti snatched gold with a 223kg clean and jerk.
India's Lovepreet Singh clinched the silver medal in the men's +110kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday after New Zealand's David Liti produced a stunning late comeback in the clean and jerk to snatch gold.
Lovepreet finished with a total lift of 388kg (176kg snatch + 212kg clean and jerk), while Liti overtook him on his penultimate lift, registering 389kg (166kg + 223kg) to claim the gold medal by a solitary kilogram. England's Andrew Griffiths took bronze with a total of 356kg.
The silver marked an improvement on Lovepreet's bronze medal from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and continued India's impressive run in weightlifting in Glasgow.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a dream start to the competition. Opening with a successful 168kg snatch, he followed it up with 173kg before producing a flawless 176kg lift on his final attempt. The effort not only earned him a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch but also improved the national record, handing him a commanding 10kg lead heading into the clean and jerk.
His advantage grew further after one of the pre-event favourites, Samoa's Sanele Mao, failed all three of his snatch attempts to bow out of contention.
Lovepreet continued his consistency in the clean and jerk, comfortably lifting 205kg before improving to 212kg, taking his overall total to 388kg, another national record.
Sensing the threat from Liti, the Indian opted for an ambitious 217kg final attempt to strengthen his grip on gold. However, he could not complete the lift, leaving the door ajar for the New Zealander.
Liti, who had trailed by 10kg after the snatch, responded with a massive 223kg clean and jerk on his second attempt to edge ahead by a kilogram and secure the Commonwealth title.
Despite missing out on gold, Lovepreet's silver capped another memorable outing on the Commonwealth stage, upgrading the bronze he won four years ago and reaffirming his status as one of India's premier heavyweight weightlifters.
