Commonwealth Games 2026: Harjinder Kaur wins silver, shatters three national records

India's Harjinder Kaur delivered one of the finest performances of her career to clinch the silver medal in the women's 69kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Tuesday.

The experienced lifter finished with a combined total of 227kg (101kg in snatch and 126kg in clean and jerk), setting new national records in all three categories while securing India's latest medal on the weightlifting platform.

Canada's C. Simoneau claimed the gold medal with a Games record total of 240kg, while Australia's N.P. Hayman settled for bronze after lifting 218kg.

Harjinder began the competition confidently, making no mistakes in the snatch. She comfortably cleared 95kg with her opening attempt before following it up with successful lifts of 99kg and 101kg. Her final lift not only improved her personal best but also established a new national record in the snatch.

Heading into the clean and jerk, Harjinder remained firmly in medal contention. She once again produced a flawless series of lifts, opening with 120kg before successfully lifting 123kg on her second attempt.

With the silver medal still on the line, the Indian opted for 126kg in her final attempt. Harjinder produced another composed lift to complete a perfect six successful lifts from six attempts, taking her overall total to 227kg.

The final lift also rewrote the Indian record books. Harjinder established new 69kg national records in snatch, clean and jerk and total.

While Simoneau's Games record of 240kg proved out of reach, Harjinder comfortably finished ahead of Hayman, who managed a total of 218kg, ensuring India added another silver medal to its growing tally in Glasgow.

Harjinder's medal continues India's impressive run in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games, with the Indian contingent consistently delivering podium finishes throughout the competition.
