Ahmedabad will host the senior World Weightlifting Championships in 2029, marking the first time India will stage the prestigious global competition, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced on Sunday.
The IWF Executive Board awarded hosting rights for four editions of its World Championships between 2028 and 2030, confirming the host cities on October 25.
India's Ahmedabad will stage the 2029 senior championships, while Moscow has been selected to host the 2030 edition.
The other two events will take place in 2028. Prishtina, Kosovo, will organise the World Youth Championships, while Caracas, Venezuela, has been chosen as the venue for the World Junior Championships.
IWF General Secretary José Quiñones welcomed the outcome of the bidding process, noting that three of the four host countries, Kosovo, Venezuela and India, will stage an IWF world event for the first time.
At the end of the EB vote, the IWF General Secretary José Quiñones expressed his satisfaction for this outcome: “All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the Championships in your respective countries will be a huge success. It is also worth noting that three of these four countries will be organising an IWF world event for the first time – Kosovo, Venezuela and India. This demonstrates our Sport is growing worldwide and the staging of our competitions is highly desirable for many nations around the planet.”
The allocation establishes the host venues for four editions of the championships across three years, with Ahmedabad set to bring the senior global weightlifting competition to India for the first time in 2029.
