India's Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden secured a convincing straight-set win over the Dutch duo Sander Arends and Robin Haase in the men's doubles first round of the US Open 2024 on Thursday night.
The second-seeded pair, who made the runner-up finish in the previous edition of the event, showcased their prowess with a 6-3, 7-5 win in 64 minutes at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.
This win marked a crucial turning point for Bopanna and Ebden, who had been seeking to regain their winning momentum after a slight dip in form following their impressive start to the season, which included an Australian Open title and a semi-final finish at the Roland Garros.
This was the first win for the Indo-Australian pair in the last four months.
The reigning Australian Open champions displayed their experience and resilience, particularly in the second set against Arends and Haase, where they staged a remarkable comeback from a 1-4 deficit to clinch the set 7-5 and the match.
Bopanna and Ebden will face the Spanish-Argentine duo of Roberto Carballes Baena and Federico Coria in the second round.
Rohan and Matthew will look for a deeper run at the US Open as they aim to secure their spot in the prestigious Nitto ATP Final. They are currently holding the fourth position in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.
In other notable matches, top seeds Granollers and Zeballos secured their place in the Nitto ATP Finals with a commanding win, further solidifying their position as one of the leading doubles teams in the world.
