US Open is one of the oldest and most well reputed tennis tournaments all over the world. It is final grand slam tournament of every year since 1987, coming after Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in chronological order. India has seen some of the best moments in these tournaments by many veteran tennis players in events like men’s singles and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Here are top 5 moments of India at the US Open.

Vijay Amritraj is a former tennis player and a Padma Shri awardee who won a total of 16 singles and 13 doubles titles. He made headlines when he reached the quarterfinals of the US Open for twice. He managed to score against Bjorn Bog in the second round but lost to Ken Rosewall in the quarterfinals.

Ramesh Krishnan

Ramesh Krishnan is an Indian tennis veteran who became India’s Davis cup captain in 2007. He reached the US Open twice in 1981 and 1987 until the quarterfinals level and was known for being well rounded in his game. He was awarded the Padma Shri award in 1998 for his contributions to Indian tennis.

Mahesh Bhupathi

Mahesh Bhupathi is very well known in Indian tennis for being the first Indian to score the grand slam tournament in 1997. He won the US Open mixed doubles with Japan’s Ai Sugiyama in 1999. He also won the same title in 2005 playing alongside Slovakian tennis player Daniela Hantuchová.

Leander Paes

Leander Paes is known as one of the best tennis players throughout the history of the sport. He has the record for most doubles wins in the Davis Cup. He won the US Open three times, first in 2006 along with Czech tennis player Martin Damm. He went on to win again in 2009 with Lukáš Dlouhý and also in 2016 with Radek Štěpánek.

Sania Mirza

Sania Mirza, ranked formerly as doubles World No. 1 has won a total of six grand slam titles in her tennis career. She is the only Indian female player to win a WTA title. She won the US Open mixed doubles in 2014 along with Brazilian tennis player Bruno Soares.
