The Indian Fed Cup team began their campaign at the Asia/Oceania Group I against Thailand earlier today and, after a rough start, came back strongly to win the tie 2-1. The day started with a defeat with Karman Kaur Thandi going down Nudnida Luangnam of Thailand. It was a surprising result for 211th ranked Karmakar's because her Thai opponent is ranked 712th in the world. However, the team soon found their bearing with Ankita Raina coming back from behind to take the second rubber while the two teamed up to win the final rubber in a dramatic finish. 2 hours into the encounter, India were down 0-1 to the Thailand team with Karman losing 2-6, 6-3, 3-6. India were expected to get past Thailand before taking on the more formidable team from Kazakhstan tomorrow. Due to the weather conditions, this tie was played indoors and coach Ankita Bhambri had stressed on the importance of the serve in such conditions. "It is important to serve well (indoor) and reach out to the ball faster. If you start a point well, the chances of ending it well also get better," she was quoted as saying by PTI. After Karman's loss, Ankita Raina began badly as she went down in the first set very narrowly. However, the World No 297 Thai player Peangtarn Plipuech proved to be no match for the quick recovery shown by Raina who ended the match with a win and a final scoreline of 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Then came the Doubles which, going by the scoreline, was not replete with drama. The duo from Thailand were serving for the match in the decider after losing out the first set. However, the Indian pair kept their nerve to win 7-5 in the final set. The scores from the match was 6-4, 6-7, 7-5. India will be taking on Kazakhstan tomorrow.
