Davis Cup 2026: Can India end a 15-year wait for a return to the Finals? -Preview

The Indian men’s team will face South Korea in an away Davis Cup Qualifiers Round 2 tie at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Centre from September 18-19.

The winner will advance to the top-tier Davis Cup Finals, where eight nations will compete for the title in November 2026, while the losing team will be relegated to Qualifiers Round 1 for next year.

This will be the 12th meeting between the two countries in the Davis Cup, with South Korea holding a narrow 6-5 lead in the head-to-head record. However, the last time they met was in 2016, when India defeated Korea 4-1.

India has not reached the top tier of the Davis Cup for 15 years, since the 2011 World Group, which featured a 16-team format. The team has also missed out multiple times after losing at this same playoff stage.

India will, however, enter the tie after a strong run, having won three consecutive ties last year, including victories over Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Sumit Nagal and Dhakshineswar Suresh will lead India’s singles challenge against Korea, while Sriram Balaji and Niki Poonacha will pair up in the men’s doubles.

Against the Netherlands, Dhakshineswar Suresh was the standout performer, winning both his singles match and the doubles alongside Yuki Bhambri.

The big-serving Suresh will again be a key figure for India as he opens the tie against a higher-ranked opponent and looks to give the team early momentum.

He will be followed by India’s No. 1 Sumit Nagal, who faces Hyeon Chung, who is ranked outside the world’s top 500 but was a former world No. 19 and Australian Open semi-finalist.

It will not be an easy task for the Indian singles players, especially with the slower and less bouncy hard-court conditions in Seoul, which could challenge their forehand game.

In the doubles, India will be without their highest-ranked player, Yuki Bhambri, who has been sidelined by injury, with Niki Poonacha coming in as his replacement.

Despite the change, the pairing of Sriram Balaji and Niki Poonacha is higher-ranked than their Korean counterparts and could play a decisive role in the overall result of the tie.

Overall, with no top-100 ranked singles players on either side, the tie could go down to the wire. India will need to adapt quickly to the conditions and make the most of its opportunities in the singles and doubles if it is to return to the Davis Cup Finals.
