Harmeet Desai and Ayhika Mukherjee win Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships
India scripted a new chapter at the 21st Commonwealth Games, as Harmeet Desai put up a stellar performance when he blasted past top-seeded G. Sathiyan to bag a gold medal in the men's singles final held in Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Cuttack. In the men's singles event, the Indian duo of Anthony Amalraj Manav Thakkar defeated compatriot Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan by 3-1. Men's doubles winners (Source: Sports Odisha) In women's singles too, the fourth-seeded Ayhika Mukherjee stormed to a sensational victory to claim gold. Her opponent Madhurika Patikar settled for a silver medal after losing to Mukherjee 4-0, however, shattering her women singles' gold medal hope. Women's doubles winners Indian contingent continued to shine even as women's doubles players Pooja Sahasrabudhe and Krittiwika Sinha Roy downed Sreeja Akula and Mousumi Paul 3-1 to clinch gold in the finals. There was no stopping the Indian players as they raced to consecutive victories. The gold count, on the penultimate day of the championships, stands at seven. India registered a stunning victory in the final of the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships when its mixed doubles pair of G. Sathiyan and Archana Kamath defeated Singapore's Peng Yu En Koen and Goi Rui Xuan 3-0 yesterday.
