Tamil Nadu unveils plans for Olympic City, Motor Sports City in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced plans to develop a world-class Olympic City and a dedicated Motor Sports City in Chennai, adding two major projects to the state’s efforts to expand its sports infrastructure.

The Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority will develop the proposed Olympic City. It will include international-standard sporting arenas, high-performance training facilities, sports science and sports medicine centres, as well as accommodation for athletes and coaches.

The project is aimed at creating a dedicated ecosystem for athletes preparing for the Olympic Games and other major international competitions. The government’s stated objective is to help Tamil Nadu produce more medal-winning athletes by bringing training, sports science, medical support and accommodation together within a single sporting facility.

The plans also extend beyond Olympic sports, with the proposed Motor Sports City intended to create specialised infrastructure for racing and driver development.

A dedicated motorsport hub

The Motor Sports City is planned to include facilities capable of hosting Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 events, alongside training infrastructure for professional racers.

The project is also expected to support the development of motorsport talent in Tamil Nadu. The government sees the facility as a potential platform for hosting international racing events while creating opportunities for local drivers and the wider motorsport ecosystem.

The announcement comes as India is also examining a possible return of Formula 1. In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports constituted a task force to examine motorsport, with the stated objective of bringing Formula 1 back to India by the end of 2028.

For Chennai, the proposed Motor Sports City would build on the city’s existing association with motorsport and provide dedicated infrastructure for a discipline that requires specialised tracks, training facilities and event operations.

The two projects broaden the scope of Tamil Nadu’s sports infrastructure plans. While the Olympic City is primarily focused on athlete preparation and performance, the Motor Sports City combines competition infrastructure with talent development and the potential to host international events.

No project cost or construction timeline for either sports city was specified in the announcement.

The proposals add to Chennai’s ambitions as a sports hub, with the state looking to develop infrastructure that can serve both elite athletes and international sporting events.
